This Maori wallhanging is titled The Voyage and represents the first of the large expeditions of Polynesians from their homeland, Hawaiiki, to New Zealand. The first voyage, in about 950AD was led by a Chief, Kupe, who returned home with precise navigational instructions for the journey to their new homeland, Aotearoa. More voyages followed until finally in about 1350AD, seven canoes of colonists arrived.
